New Media at the University of Leeds

There are a number of practical New Media modules in the Institute of Communications Studies:
Interface Design

COMM1730 Interface Design

This module develops web design skills. Illustrating the importance of usability, accessibility and platform independence it aims to show how creative flair can be combined with industry standards to create professional quality products.

Dynamic Web Programming

COMM2735 Dynamic Web Programming

This module aims to develop an understanding of the server side web publishing model and develop skills in server side programming and database development as well as engaging with academic and industry literature to frame practice in theory.

Interface Design

COMM3780 Mobile Media

This module examines the development, theory and form of the contemporary ecology of mobile media and applies this knowledge in a technical context in which students will develop the skills to create mobile products, services or campaigns.

Design for New Media

COMM1720 Design for New Media

First year New Media students use bitmap/vector drawing package in parallel with a consideration of design principles and visual aesthetics to respond to specific, cross-media briefs.


Digital Storytelling

COMM2715 Digital Storytelling

This module (and its predecessor, Interactive Narrative and Gaming) examines forms of digital storytelling in the context of traditional and interactive narrative. It explores the role of digital storytelling in a range of social contexts.

Working in New Media

COMM2790 Working in New Media

This module introduces students to processes and issues in new media work and production. Students work in groups to respond to a range of real-life industry briefs.


Final Year Project

COMM3710/20 Final Year Project

The aim of this module is to produce an artefact based upon the specification developed in the previous semester during COMM3710. Students will learn how to manage their own production environment and develop technical, design and evaluation skills, while continuing to improve time management skills.

Citizen Media

COMM3790 Citizen Media

This module explores the changing nature of citizenship and its relationship to new media. Third year students designed examples of particular forms of online citizen media.
